Tiivistelmä:The authors advance and subsequently test the proposition that markets for fine art are rational, namely, that, in the determination of price, traders make use of all relevant art historical and critical information, as revealed by hedonic content analysis, as well as all information on authenticity of the works offered for sale. If true, the proposition has consequences for public policy. Museums optimize choices among art historically significant authentic paintings distributed as stochastic rare events in the tertiary market for art.
