Tiivistelmä:Organizations including the WTO and OECD, and also USA and EU have argued that trade in e-commerce can improve the overall economic growth in less developed countries. The benefits for individuals, companies and countries in the developed world have already been proven before. The authors aim to question the assumptions that underlie within the current way of thinking. The frailties of e-commerce as a facilitator of economic growth in developing countries are introduced, they are: the absence of state in any role, the underestimation of the society’s polarization and the failure to separate the different types of e-commerce. The authors consider the readiness of developing countries to participate in e-commerce and the industries of these countries that could act as a pull sectors for e-commerce. Finally it is discussed whether social, political and institutional agreements are needed to encourage and sustain e-commerce in the developing states.
