| Tiivistelmä: | In industries with capacity constraints and nonstorable outputs, in the power and communications industries, in particular, the recent development of remotely controlled microelectronic control and metering devices allows a form of market organization, called priority service in which customers subscribe in advance to the order in which they will be served, to allocate scarce supplies more efficiently than, say, random rationing. The optimal choice of contract duration is affected by the cost of recontracting and the stochastic properties of demand. Models are formulated that capture these ingredients and that can be used to examine the factors that affect the optimal contract period. |
