| Tiivistelmä: | The number of American workers working in shifts is increasing as more and more service-oriented companies extend their hours. Some businesses maintain continuous operations. The 24-hour business creates unique management problems. This was the case with the Manville Building Insulation Plant in Willows, California. The work schedules used since 1975 are described. In 1984 a change in work schedules was considered because of the workers' dissatisfaction with the old ones. A small group was set up to find solution to the complex problem. Three factors - body clocks, family needs and social needs - were examined. Alternative work schedules were tested. After a trial period 83 p.c. of the workers voted to stay on the 12-hour schedule. |
