Tiivistelmä:The central focus of this paper has been to assess the utility of 'networks' and 'networking' for studying small business owners. This has important implications for understanding how small business owners link with the wider environment. The thematic approach includes i) the family and kinship; ii) co-directors and partners; iii) customers and the market; iv) investment and finance. The methodological strategy is critical incident' analysis. It shows that owner-management tend to have relatively small and non-extensive networks. They don't commonly use networks based on family, kinship or social groupings. A 'fortress enterprise' mentality in dealing with the wider environment is very characteristic for them, as the panel discussions with 45 owner-managers indicate.
