Tiivistelmä:There is talk of the death of the General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade /GATT/ and even hints that, as a result the world trading system, it will crumble into chaos. The Uruguay Round has been wasted negotiating over the wrong matters, and the USA needs to move on to a national economic strategy that will refocus on manufacturing and the strength of the USA economy. According to the authors, GATT died after the Tokyo Round. The GATTists' fervour has blinded them to the truth about GATT; it worked only because the USA was rich and strong enough to underwrite it. Today GATT is dead because USA economic strength was successfully transferred to Europe and Japan. The USA can no longer carry the burden of GATT, it should rely on competitiveness.
