| Tiivistelmä: | This article explores whether there is need for regulation in industries of the internet economy due to network effects. The analysis is based on instruments derived from, the traditional literature on network effects which are discussed in detail m the first part of the paper. Three industries of the internet economy are identified, where strong network effects are present the internet infrastructure the software industry, and the intermediaries sector. The analysis indicates that market participants mostly are able to build institutions to overcome market failures. However, since the incentives for anticompetitive behaviour ate strong, in some situations government intervention may be necessary to maintain competition. This is especially true for the software industry (original in German). |
