Tiivistelmä:In this paper, the technical efficiency (henceforth as: t-eff.) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is compared with that of large firms. The factors influencing t-eff. for Taiwan's electronics industry are explored. Unlike conventional studies, two alternative approaches are used to control for the influence of size effect (as: s-eff.). One is the 2-stage switching regression to correct for endogenous s-eff. on t-eff. The other is a metafrontier production function for firms in different groups. Among others, it is found that the average t-eff. for large firms is higher than that of SMEs, without considering the s-eff., and lower when considering the endogenous choice on firm size. Thus, it is not possible to conclude that there is a negative size- t-eff. relationship. However, it is shed light on the importance of s-eff. on the size- t-eff. nexus etc.
