Tiivistelmä:The use of environmental (herein as: env-al.) management systems for initiating and controlling env-al. improvements in the context of supply chain cooperation is explored. It is examined how env-al. requirements are reaching smaller companies in the electronics supply chain, particularly related to the recent legal changes e.g. enforcement of the RoHS Directive. Based on qualitative interviews with environmental and purchasing managers of 21 small and medium-sized (SME) companies, there is uncovered a lack of significant drivers for these companies to implement proactive measures when dealing with environmental issues, owing to limited customer pressure. RoHS and legal compliance are the only env-al. customer criteria, while ISO 14001 works as an optional supplier selection criterion. Thus, companies are not focusing on env-al. work within their supply chains, and the potential of influencing the env-al. profile of suppliers by shaping their ISO 14001 is not used.
