Tiivistelmä:This paper examines the ownership sequences and performance of the two hundred largest companies in Hungary in 1991-1999. The analysis starts from the conception that corporate ownership structures played an important role in navigating postsocialist uncertainties, and that due to their relational structure nature, they were also vulnerable to subsequent path dependencies. This study identifies pathways by applying optimal matching analysis and defines ownership regimes by applying dynamic scaling analysis. Hypotheses about how sequences mattered are introduced and tested. The results of the analysis indicate that postsocialist time was not an easy transition from state to private ownership. Uncertainties were cocooned by network forms up until the year 1995. Later, however, firms were cooped up by domestic corporate coalitions, which translated into inferior performance compared to manager buy-outs, domestic subsidiaries and foreign-owned companies.
