Tiivistelmä:Division of labour is a central problem in both sociology and economics. In this paper the division of household and paid labour between partners is analyzed by using an inte- grated sociological and economic approach. Elements of role theory, exchange theory, and new home economics are combined within a rational choice framework. On the basis of a sample of Dutch couples we found that both the wife's share in paid labour and her share in household labour are affected by the partner's relative wage rates as well as by the normes of the network of the household. The presence of (young) chil- dren has the biggest impact on the division of paid labour between partners. The hypothesis that the responses of wives and husbands to changes in relative wage rates are larger the more modern the norms of the network are is not confir- med.
