Tiivistelmä:The potential applications of renewable electricity sources are many and varied. The ubiquitous nature of many renewables means that renewable energy is frequently available for small and isolated applications where transporting and using fossil fuels is expensive. In such cases, the penalties and difficulties imposed by the variability of many renewables may be significant, though they may still be more than offset by the high value of utilizing locally available resources, even if the storage is required to exploit them effectively. It has been widely asserted that the application of renewable sources on larger power systems will be severely constrained unless cheap storage can be developed. It is proved that this assertion is false.
