| Tiivistelmä: | Consultants have been playing a major role in previous years, facilitating the implementation of advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) in client organizations and giving them expert advice and support. The findings from a survey of 200 consultancies in the area of AMT are discussed. Evidence obtained from this survey shows that the criteria used as the basis for making decisions regarding automation are weak and based on quantitative investment criteria. Senior managers' judgement was considered to be weak because of their inexperience, and it was felt that this should not be a substitute for "careful analysis". The reported problems were associated with inadequate resources and communication. The failures were not due to lack of government help or workforce resistance. |
