| Tiivistelmä: | The mixed-model assembly line balancing problem is introduced. As an extension to the traditional capacity oriented approach, we consider objectives which aim at minimizing operational inefficiencies in an anticipatory manner. These objectives are examined by analyzing the interdependencies between the medium-term balancing problem and the sequencing problem which arises for short-term production programms. Within a hierarchical planning system, such objectives are of particular importance. The analysis indicates that a simple new criterion is superior to those already presented in the literature. This finding is confirmed by a numerical experiment. |
