Tiivistelmä: | Wage inequality grew larger in the 1980s in the United States while it remained constant in Canada. Returns to education increased faster in the United States than in Canada, but returns to experience increased more in Canada than in the United States. During the period unionization rates fell precipitously in the United States but declined very little in Canada. The real minimum wage declined 23% in the United States but only 12% in Canada. It was found that unions and the minimum wage accounted for two-thirds of the differential growth of wage inequality between the countries. Labor market institutions are an important explanation for the difference in the evolution of overall wage inequlity. |
