Tiivistelmä:This article tests the suggestions made in theories of employee diversity affecting business performance as a result of customer preferences and changes in workplace relationships. Using data from over 700 retail stores, this article concludes that contrary to past theories, the results do not support the suggestion that similarity between employees and customers increases sales. However, the Asian employees form an exception as they seem to be most productive when many nearby residents are non-English speaking Asian immigrants. Finally, diversity of gender and race within a store did not affect sales, but age diversity seemed to lower sales.
