| Tiivistelmä: | In this paper, a brief overview is provided of the current state of the not-for-profit (hereafter as: nfp.) sector. Specific governance issues in not-for-profit organizations (here as: nfp-orgs.) are discussed. An in-depth analysis is presented of the issues arising when nfp-orgs. compete against for-profit firms (as: fp-frs.) in the same markets. It is argued that while competition by fp-frs. can discipline nfp. firms, mitigating their governance problems, the effects of this competition are distorted by the nfp-orgs.' corporate income tax exemptions. Based on a simple general equilibrium analysis, it is argued that little justification is be found for such exemptions. |
