Tiivistelmä:A general assumption is that a monopoly produces nondurable goods. It is demonstrated that a monopoly may be willing to produce durable goods, because durability creates new innovation incentives. Once an initial stock of a durable good has been produced, the monopoly faces a residual demand for the good. Exploiting this residual demand increases profits. It is demonstrated that innovation may allow the monopoly to exploit the residual demand for the good more profitably and this ability may lead the monopoly to devote more resources to innovation than it is socially optimal.
