Tiivistelmä:Literature on declining organizations focuses on two indicators of decreasing size - loss of financial resources and work force reduction. Following the psychological threat-rigidity thesis, loss of financial resources is proposed to cause shifts in organizational structure and jobs. A more complex model is developed to integrate the decline and size literature. This effort combines psychological and sociological perspectives to distinguish the effects of these two variables. In the short term the mechanistic effects of the threat are dominant, but in the long term the threat wanes and, following sociological theory, less mechanistic means of coordination and control are used (for the smaller workforce).
