| Tiivistelmä: | The author maintains that anti-dumping procedures are a form of new protectionism. The threat of an anti-dumping file increases the costs of marketing for the foreign firm and thus deters competition. A formal model of dumping by a price discriminating firm is given. Dumping may be a profitable undertaking if the firm realises economies of scale. A three-equation simultaneous equation model of anti-dumping protectionism is given and estimated by US data. Endogenous variables are import penetration, number of antidumping petitions filed and ratio of successful antidumping petitions. |
