Tiivistelmä: | The technology transfer strategies of multinational firms are examined as they have relocated labor-intensive manufacture to export processing zones in a succession of Asian nations. The production and managerial technologies transferred are intended to reduce costs, but their negative impact on the predominantly female workforces employed soon undermines this objective. Moreover, since women workers are also consumers, their alienation is counterproductive to marketing goals. As Asia becomes viewed not only as a low-cost production site, but also a dynamic growth market, strategies must be reassessed and reformulated if corporate goals are to be met. |
