Tiivistelmä: | The sun's radiation reaching the earth is in the wavelength range of 0.2 to 4.0 um, whereas outbond radiation from the earth is in the infrared longwave bands /4 -10 um/. Water vapours and the greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide, CFCs, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone - are transparent to shortwave radiation but opaque to longwave. They thus permit the sun's radiation to penetrate to the earth but trap a portion of the earth's outbond radiation. This trapping effect is called the greenhouse effect. Radiative forcing, climate feedback and global warming caused by the greenhouse effect are discussed in detail. Finally, impact of global warming and policy implications are analysed. |
