| Tiivistelmä: | When the USA, Canada and Mexico completed negotiations for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in August 1992, they took the first promising step towards creating the world's largest free-trade area. In those negotiations the three countries committed themselves on paper to increase trade within the region by keeping markets open and minimising conflict through improved local origin rules as well as tighter and more impartial procedures on dispute resolution. Before the treaty can be implemented, however, it has to be ratified, and here the prospects are uncertain. |
