Tiivistelmä:The rupture of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) in September has led many to conclude that European Monetary Union (EMU) is doomed. In fact, this view is almost certainly over-pessimistic. Assuming that the Maastricht treaty is eventually ratifies by all the member states, the ERM should start no later than 1999. Some EC member states may not be included, however, if they have failed to meet the economic standards necessary to qualify. A small number of "core countries" may also go ahead sooner, perhaps as early as 1997, leaving the rest excluded.
