| Tiivistelmä: | Government programs for the elderly are in trouble in many of the world's great industrial democracies. Some problems here are inevitable consequence of excessive government generosity in years past designed to win short-term political popularity, excesses that must now be balanced by a period of relative austerity. A more fundamental set of problems related to current and future financing of these programs, however, is the result of demographics rather than politics. People in prosperous societies live longer and require more resources to to sustain these extended life spans even at modest levels of dignity and comfort. |
