| Tiivistelmä: | The paper gives a comparative analysis of the effects of technical change upon the division of labour in Rochdale and Aberdeen during the 1980s. The results from 53 case studies confirm that there had been considerable technical change in the plants examined, particularly in the area of office administrative functions. The main area of systematic difference lay in the degree of perceived managerial discretion in terms of the execution of technical change rather than in terms of detailed outcomes within the division of labour. There was a strong positive association between computerization and increased levels of skills. |
