Tiivistelmä:In this article the authors focus on consequences that arise when change becomes excessive. In this inductive investigation based on three case studies, the authors uncovered six coping mechanisms used to deal with excessive change: BOHICA, paralysis, exit, sabotage, self-control, and loyalty. These coping mechanisms encompass responses that are both passive and active, and they either promote change or promote the status quo. At the organizational level the authors found that excessive change resulted in both structural and performance consequences. Musical chairs, orchestrating without a conductor, and shaky foundations described situations having structural consequences. Performance consequences were a result of implementation failure and loss of effectiveness.
