Tiivistelmä:Huge coffee surpluses have driven the prices so low that an estimated 20m farmers world-wide face a very grim future. The outlook for tee and cocoa however is more optimistic. During the past two years, major producers of African softs notably Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia, have experienced severe balance of payments difficulties. This is because prices for their main agricultural commodities have weakened considerably from the heady levels of 1997 and 1998. In conclusion the author states that it is still early to provide any forecasts for 2001/2002 season. However, the weather remains the main determining factor; thus a mixture of wet and dry seasons in west Africa in the coming month would provide good conditions for main crop flowering and mid crop harvesting.
