Tiivistelmä:The paper considers the historical roots of the study of organizations, a central concern, a defining question, or theme was "What are the consequences of the existence of organizations". This concern was deeply embedded in the work of a founding father of this discipline, Max Weber (1964). It can also be found, historically, in the work of Michels (1962) and Burnham (1941). The question of the consequences of the existence of organizations was addressed at two levels: first, how organizations affect the pattern of privilege and disadvantage in society; second, how privilege and disadvantage are distributed within organizations. The authors believe that the former question all but disappeared from discussion in the ASQ in the '80s and '90s, while the latter has received only fitful treatments.
