Tiivistelmä:The operating environment within which North Sea oil and gas exploitation is taking place is both uncertain and subject to change. Some aspects are exogenous, others have arisen from factors within the province. The future behaviour of the industry depends on how it reacts to the current problems. The prospects for the North Sea are examined against this background. It is found that very large numbers of discovered but undeveloped oil and gas fields exist in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). Modest real growth in oil and gas prices could lead to the development of new gas and oil fields, and to a major increase in the total numbers of oil and gas fields in production from present levels until well into the next century.
