| Tiivistelmä: | This paper considers waste management from both a theoretical and a heuristic perspective. The basis idea is to apply the (square root) Andler formular for optimal storage to optimal disposal. The formular we derive shows that the disposal rates depend positively on the amount to be disposed of per time unit and negatively on the cost of disposal. In our theoretical model, the amount to be disposed of is a linear function of time. This is a rather stark assumption. Therefore, we develop heuristic procedures to calculate (near) optimal disposal rates. In a second part of the paper we endogenize the amount of waste to be disposed of. Depending on the cost of waste disposal and of waste avoidance, firms decide on the amount of waste they "produce". We then take the utility's perspective and calculate the profit maximizing. |
