Tiivistelmä:This article is a presentation of the higher education systems and the models for financing higher education in the Nordic countries, where the use of student numbers and productivity in terms of student flow is a central element. Until the end of the 19th century there were only five universities in the nordic countries. The first quarter of the 20th century was a period of growth in the number of universities, but the big institutional expansion began in all the Nordic countries in the 1960s and culminated in the 1970s when more than 25 new universities and schools were founded.
