| Tiivistelmä: | The relationship between the Universities of Europe and the bodies which provide their state funding is changing rapidly. The role of the State has changed from being on the supply side of the higher education to aligning itself with the market. Pressures on public expenditure and Universities' own wish to have greater autonomy, to cope with fluctuations in income and to be able to take advantage of new opportunities, have combined to challenge the traditional pattern of dependence on State funding. After reviewing the international position the article explores case studies in Sweden and in Scotland. |
