| Tiivistelmä: | This paper analyzes the impact of new funding arrangements for research in Sweden which are intended to cause a shift from the emphasis of disciplinary-based research (Mode 1) to multidisciplinary and problem focused research (Mode 2). It focuses on management at the institutional level. It will analyze the tension between the university as a unit for academic freedom and autonomy, and controls exercised by external funding bodies, private or public. The interviews with vice-chancellors indicate a strategic approach in order to meet requirements of stability, flexibility and autonomy of the institution. |
