Tiivistelmä:This article presents a model, following a review of the literature, for comparing tools that evaluate museum performance on the basis of validity, reliability, feasibility, externality and synthesis. The practices of 14 museums, seven each in France and the United States, are analyzed using four quantitative indicators, that is, costs, consumer revenues, number of visitors and total revenues. These indicators neglect non-paying consumers and future generations. One possible solution is to include qualitative indicators whereby the strengths and weaknesses of each measure compensate for each other. Two evaluation indicators, efficiency scores and consumer benefits, appear to be theoretically suitable yet are rarely used. Although these indicators require data that are difficult to collect, they are appropriate for museum evaluation.
