Tiivistelmä:This article examines the concept of relational practice (hereafter as: RP) and illustrates the multifunctional nature of workplace discourse. RP, e.g. small talk, humor, serves to advance the primary objectives of the workplace and is often regarded as secondary or trivial. The analyses of New Zealand workplace discourse show that RP is used primarily for creating a team or managing potentially conflicting situations. Because of the invisible nature of RP-practices, RP is often considered gendered work and stereotypically feminine behavior. However, this paper discusses the hypothesis that manifestations or RP differ in separate work communities and the validity of equating RP with feminized discourse is questioned.
