Tiivistelmä:Too often, tooling-up is the stepchild of product development even though it may involve the second largest outlay of funds. Careful planning and controls, managed by an interdepartmental team of experienced people, can make this phase more productive and economical. The distinguishing features for a high-tech tooling-up phase are outlined. The most often used methods in schedule planning and control are briefly reviewed. The role and techniques of cost control are considered. Some ways of cost reduction are mentioned. An integrated cost-schedule control is suggested. Quality control is also a very important part of tooling-up, and Quality Engineers are to be closely associated with the tooling-up team. The function of Pareto analysis is also highlighted.
