| Tiivistelmä: | The review deals with the growing European Union's (EU) attention to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The problem has been addressed to by the BEST task force. In the early 1980s, the European Community (EC) organized a "European year" of SMEs and the craft industry. SMEs actually account for a very substantial part of commercial activity in Europe, Nowadays, there are 18.5 million SMEs, generating more than 60 % of business turnover, and 66 % of total employment. With 18 million people un-employed in the EU in 1998, the creation of jobs is of top priority. |
