FRINGE BENEFITS

Tiivistelmä:At first sight the shareholder value concept seems to be incompatible with the voluntary provision of firm fringe benefits. Whether these fringe benefits clash with shareholder interests crucially depends on the logic being followed when offering firm benefits: Does fringe benefit provision follow "social motives", is the underlying motive a merely fianancial one, does it aim at productivity enhancement or are fringe benefits the result of successful "self service" by privileged managers in the firm? The implications of these alternative explanations of firm fringe benefit provision are tested empirically with the help of an international workplace survey.
