Tiivistelmä:A popular way to estimate the size of the underground economy is to use so-called macro methods. In general, macro methods discern the size of the underground economy by using some observable macro variable depending on another observable macro variable and on the unobservable underground economy. This paper reviews two of those methods in detail - the electricity method and the currency methods. The study uses data gathered from Chez Republic and other transition countries. It is concluded that those methods neither identify those who are practicing tax evasion nor provide a consistent and reasonable estimate of its magnitude. The study argues that above methods are not applicable for estimating the size of underground economies in transition economies. The main reason is that the pace of change of these parameters is too variable.
