Tiivistelmä:In this article the authors study how changes in small and medium sized enterprises (SMES)internationalisation strategies in terms of markets and modes is influenced by current relationships. The authors provide a detailed investigation on 10 Sweden and 10 New Zealand based firms about how their relationships have influenced 116 strategic changes examined at their firms. The authors use a qualitative research method to build up a theory. They introduce a conceptual model with 8 categories focusing to relationship and in addition develop a model related to strategic change during the internationalisation process of the firm. The findings indicate that relationships have an important role in strategic developments. The main findings were that business relationships have a bigger impact in internationalisation strategy changes than social relationships, particularly regarding mode changes in foreign markets. In addition the authors state that direct relationship has a bigger influence in changes than indirect third party influences.
