| Tiivistelmä: | A sample is examined of 160 business unit observations drawn from data provided by over 200 member companies of the Strategic Planning Institute. All the selected sample business units enjoyed superior technological opportunities during 8 years before 1978. The research intensity was measured by non-quoted-government-financed R and D expenditures as a percentage sales. Results indicate that where the cost and uncertainty of R and D are high and conditions favor speedy imitation by competitors, concentration has a statistically significant and positive impact on research intensity. But its impact is clearly negative when R and D cost and uncertainty are low, and where high barriers to imitation exist. |
