Tiivistelmä:Much recent work in international trade theory is concerned with the degree of competition between firms and how various policies interact with this competition. Surprisingly little attention has been focused on determining just which products compete with each other. An empirical technique is developed which identifies the competition when products are multi-dimensionally differentiated. Previous approaches are briefly discussed. The theoretical background of the new methodology is considered. The steps towards implementing the theory are described and analyzed. An example is provided: the competitors of every 1987 model year automobile are identified. Sensitivity analyses are also conducted.
