| Tiivistelmä: | According to recent investigations, during the past decade of deregulation, airline fares were consistently lower than they would have been if the industry were still regulated. It was examined whether market forces are operating as freely as possible in fare determination. The findings show that fares fall with increased competition, but this effect is limited at slot-controlled airports, and that an airline's entry and exit behaviour is significantly influenced by its own (but not its competitors') networks. The implications of these findings are discussed for public policy at the conclusion of the paper. |
