Tiivistelmä:About 100 kilometres east of Milan, the north Italian city Brescia has an environment which is very favourable to businessmen and to vigorous small companies. It has an entrepreneurial tradition, stemming from the Roman times. The reasons for it are analysed, and shown through examples. The 450,000 people living in the province of Brescia work for 20,000 companies, 80 p.c. of which have fewer than 10 employees. Interviews with managers of some firms are presented, together with their case stories. The Brescia model is not unique, equivalents can be found in rapidly growing regions of developed countries, like in the French Alps, in southern Germany and elsewhere.
