Tiivistelmä:The deregulation (hereafter as: dereg.) of the U.S. domestic airline industry resulted in the reconfiguration of airline networks (here as: nets.) into hub-and-spoke systems. In contrast, European airlines already operated spatially concentrated nets. long before dereg. This paper investigates post-dereg. temporal concentrations (as: contrs.) in European aviation nets. The development and configuration of wave-system structures (as: w-s-strs.) at European airline hubs is analyzed as well as the resulting transfer opportunities during the 1990s. It is found that a temporal contrs. trend exists among European airlines with dereg. resulting in the adoption or intensification of w-s-strs. by airlines. These w-s-strs., as well as overall traffic growth, have significantly stimulated the number of indirect hub connections. Airline hubs with w-s-strs. generally perform better because of the increased indirect connectivity given the number of direct connections.
