| Tiivistelmä: | While the whole industry is declining in East Germany, a town in Thuringia resists the trend: Lothar Spaeth and his team are developing Carl Zeiss Jena, formerly a show combine of the socialist country, into a modern technology and service centre. Spaeth, formerly minister president of Baden-Würtenberg, now head of Jenoptik GmbH, upset not only the corporation but the town of Jena and its surroundings as well. The process is accompanied by huge outcry because it has victims too: 20 000 of the 30 000 best trained employees have lost job. The originally large corporation is splitted into a lot of smaller independent units. However, the intensive transformation process and investments have already achieved considerable results. |
