Tiivistelmä: | The greenhouse impacts of coal, oil and natural gas are compared. Emissions from the complete fuel-cycles for each of the fuels are included. Methane and nitrous oxide as well as carbon dioxide emissions are addressed. Both the near- and long-term carbon-dioxide-equivalent greenhouse-forcing effects resulting from consuming one megajoule of each fuel are evaluated. Natural-gas exploitation is less offensive from a greenhouse perspective than either coal or oil exploitation compared on a per megajoule basis in both time-frames. The greenhouse forcing caused by fossil-fuel based electricity/heat systems using a variety of technologies is compared on a per kilowatt hour basis. |
