| Tiivistelmä: | A computer programme has been created to allocate umpires to the most important English cricket matches. The method used is able to find a quick, semi-random initial solution, and then improve it using a local improvement method. The program can be run several times in succession in order to find the best solution. Two technical points concerning the exact formulation of the objective function are discussed in the paper, since they are probably relevant to other applications. The results produced by the programme have been found by the client to be highly satisfactory, and the programme is flexible enough to cope quickly with a sudden and wholly unexpected crisis. |
