| Tiivistelmä: | In 1931 Stalin fixed the scale of the development lag between the USSR and the West: "We are fifty or a hundred years behind the advanced countries". The author states that it would be good to put a more scientifically founded figure on the extent to which the interwar economies of the USSR and Eastern Europe lagged behind West European benchmarks. Such information is required for an analysis of the balance of economic forces on each side as Europe entered World War II. |
